Your Long Island Tankless Water Heater Team

Tankless water heaters need to be installed, maintained, and repaired by plumbers who understand both the equipment and Long Island’s water chemistry, because Long Island’s hard water deposits scale on heat exchangers faster than national averages assume.

Universe has been handling water heater work across Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County since 1954, and our licensed plumbers have repaired tankless units across Levittown, Merrick, Hicksville, and Babylon long enough to know which symptoms point to a quick descale and which ones mean a deeper diagnosis is needed.

Your Tankless Water Heater Repair, Step by Step

From your first call to the moment your unit is delivering hot water again, the path forward is straightforward.

Call or reach out online. We ask the right questions about your tankless unit: brand, fuel type, age, and what you are experiencing. Most calls across Long Island get same-day service, with immediate dispatch for active leaks or no-hot-water situations.

Your plumber arrives on time and starts by hearing what you have noticed: error codes displayed on the unit, when the symptom started, anything that changed recently. From there, the full system gets inspected: heat exchanger, gas supply or electrical feed, ignition components, sensors, inlet filter, venting if applicable, and water connections. The goal is the root cause, not a guess based on the loudest symptom.

Once the diagnosis is complete, you hear what was found in plain language and receive the cost before any work begins. Once you approve, the repair is completed using quality parts, and the unit is run through a full hot water cycle to confirm it is operating correctly before your plumber leaves.

Signs Your Tankless Water Heater Needs Repair

Tankless water heaters fail differently than tank units, and the specific symptom tells the technician where to start.

Our licensed plumbers handle the full range of tankless repair issues across Long Island homes.

Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County hard water deposits mineral scale on tankless heat exchangers, which reduces efficiency, restricts flow, and eventually triggers shutdowns when the unit cannot maintain its target temperature. We see this regularly in Hicksville, Bethpage, and Plainview where tankless adoption has grown without consistent annual flushing, and descaling the unit, restoring flow, and confirming heat transfer brings the system back to where it should be.

A gas tankless unit that will not fire or that cuts out mid-use has an ignition system, gas supply, or flame sensor issue, and we handle these calls often across Massapequa, Merrick, and East Meadow. Diagnosing whether the cause is a fouled flame sensor, an ignition control failure, a gas pressure problem, or a venting issue gets hot water restored without replacing components that are not actually at fault.

Temperature swings, water that goes from hot to cold to hot during a single shower, or a unit delivering only lukewarm water has a flow sensor issue, a mixing valve problem, or scale-restricted flow that the unit cannot keep up with. Homeowners in Wantagh, Seaford, and Bellmore call us for this when a unit that ran fine for years suddenly stops holding temperature, and identifying the specific cause is what separates a real fix from a temporary improvement.

Modern tankless units display error codes when they shut down, and reading those codes correctly matters because the same code can have multiple underlying causes depending on operating conditions. We see these calls regularly in Garden City, Mineola, and Westbury where newer high-efficiency tankless installations have introduced more diagnostic complexity, and interpreting the code in the context of the full system resolves the underlying issue before the unit cycles through the same failure again.

Gas tankless units require proper combustion air and venting for safe, efficient operation, and a venting blockage, condensate drain issue, or combustion air problem can trigger lockouts or unsafe operation. We handle these calls across Amityville, Lindenhurst, and Babylon where exterior vent terminations are exposed to weather and debris, and verifying the full venting and combustion path is what keeps the repair from becoming a callback the next time conditions change.

A leak at water or gas connections, the heat exchanger, or condensate management on a high-efficiency unit needs prompt attention before the leak compounds or affects nearby finishes. Homeowners in Farmingdale, Syosset, and Huntington call us for this when they notice unexpected moisture around the unit or hear water flow when no fixture is in use, and tracing the leak source and resolving it correctly before the surrounding area sustains damage is what we are dispatched to do.

Why Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County Homeowners Trust Universe for Tankless Water Heater Repair

Choosing who handles your tankless repair in Garden City, Syosset, West Babylon, or anywhere across Long Island matters when the work involves gas connections, electrical, and equipment that requires specific training to diagnose.

A licensed plumber who knows tankless systems and responds fast is what separates a real fix from a unit that fails again next week.

Every tankless water heater repair Universe completes is performed by a licensed plumber. That matters when the work involves gas supply, electrical components, water connections, and sealed combustion equipment that affects the safety of your home.

Most tankless repair calls are handled same day across Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County, and for active leaks or no-hot-water situations in Farmingdale, Lindenhurst, Huntington, or Rockville Centre, 24/7 service means you are not left without hot water overnight.

You hear what was found and what it costs to fix before any work begins, so the price you approve is the price on the invoice. No scope creep, no surprise add-ons when the work is complete.

Universe is a BBB Accredited Business and PHCC member, and every tankless water heater repair is backed by those standards.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Tankless Water Heater?

When your tankless unit needs a significant repair, replacement is a fair question to ask.

Both options get an honest read with no pressure in either direction, based on the unit in front of us and what reliable hot water looks like over the next several years.

Tankless water heaters typically last 20 years or more with proper maintenance, which is significantly longer than a traditional tank’s 10 to 12 year service life. A unit under 12 years old with an isolated component failure is almost always worth repairing, while one approaching or past 20 years facing a major repair, especially if the heat exchanger is involved, is worth a replacement conversation.

When the cost of a significant repair, particularly heat exchanger replacement, approaches the installed cost of a new unit, replacement is often the better investment. A new tankless unit comes with a manufacturer warranty and the latest efficiency standards, while continued repair on an aging unit rarely delivers the same long-term value.

A tankless unit sized for a smaller household or a different fixture count may struggle to keep up as usage changes, and what shows up as a repair symptom is sometimes actually undersizing. Your plumber can evaluate whether the current unit is sized correctly for your household before recommending a path forward.

The heat exchanger is the most expensive component in a tankless unit, and a heat exchanger with significant scale damage, corrosion from inadequate flushing, or developing pinhole leaks signals that the unit has reached a decision point. Your plumber gives you an honest assessment of what the heat exchanger condition means for the unit’s remaining service life before any decision is made.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tankless Water Heater Repair

How long does a tankless water heater last?

Most tankless water heaters last more than 20 years with proper maintenance, which is significantly longer than the 10 to 12 years typical of a traditional tank. Annual descaling on Long Island, where hard water accelerates mineral buildup on the heat exchanger, is the most important maintenance practice for hitting that long service life.

Why does my tankless unit display an error code?

Modern tankless units display error codes when they shut down, and the code points to a category of issue: ignition failure, flame sensor problem, venting blockage, water flow issue, or scale buildup affecting heat transfer. Reading the code in the context of operating conditions is what tells the plumber whether it is a quick descale, a sensor replacement, or a deeper repair.

Can hard water really damage a tankless water heater?

Yes. Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County water deposits mineral scale on the heat exchanger over time, and untreated scale buildup reduces efficiency, restricts flow, and eventually triggers shutdowns or, in extreme cases, damages the heat exchanger itself. Annual flushing and descaling is the standard recommendation for tankless units on Long Island for that reason.

Is a tankless repair worth it on an older unit?

That depends on the age of the unit, the nature of the repair, and the condition of the heat exchanger. A unit under 12 years old with an isolated component failure is almost always worth repairing, while a unit approaching or past 20 years with a heat exchanger problem is usually a replacement candidate. Your plumber gives you an honest read after seeing the system.

How quickly can you get to my home for tankless repair?

Most tankless water heater repair calls across Long Island are handled same day. For active leaks or no-hot-water situations in Wantagh, West Hempstead, Deer Park, Huntington, or anywhere we serve, 24/7 emergency service is available, and Home Comfort Club members receive priority scheduling when call volume is high.
