Who You Want Working on Your Wiring

Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County homeowners call Universe when the wiring in their home needs attention from someone who actually knows what is behind the walls.

Long Island’s older homes are electrically complex in ways specific to this market. The building boom of the 1950s and 1960s produced hundreds of thousands of homes wired for a different era, with aluminum branch circuit wiring common from the mid-1960s through the early 1970s, knob-and-tube wiring still present in older sections, and undersized circuits and double-tapped breakers as routine findings.

Our licensed master electricians have been working in these homes for decades. They know what to expect when the cover plates come off, and they know how to address each condition correctly and to current code.

Wiring assessments in older homes can go in many directions. We give you an honest picture of what was found, what code requires, and what is recommended for safety, without inflating the scope of the work.

Wiring work frequently intersects with plumbing and HVAC, including circuits that serve pumps, air handlers, or mechanical equipment. We cover all three, so one call handles what the assessment turns up.

Burning smells, sparking outlets, and dead circuits do not wait for business hours. We are available around the clock for urgent electrical issues on Long Island.

We live and work on Long Island. Homeowners across Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County rely on us because we know the homes here and we stand by the work.

I had called Universe Home Services for my AC issues (unusual noise, and Smell). Universe sent two technicians (Ryan,M and Pete,M) who were Very knowledgeable, Polite, and explained my options in simple terms that I could make educated decisions with. ๐Ÿ‘ This company does a great job hiring the right people for the right job, the AC installers(Keith, Quan, King) were very efficient, clean, and polite. They installed all Carriers Ductless ACโ€™s, super quiet equipment. This company even has their own electricians who worked tirelessly (Ryan,T and Trevor) five star rating by me and my family!

New Wiring Installation

New wiring is required any time you add circuits, add square footage, or install equipment that did not exist when the home was built.

Universe installs new wiring across Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County for a full range of residential applications.

EV chargers, heat pumps, electric dryers, hot tubs, and whole-home generators all require dedicated circuits sized for their specific load. Universe pulls the permit, installs the circuit, and coordinates the inspection as part of the project.

Older Long Island homes routinely have rooms with one or two outlets on a shared circuit, which is below modern usage and often below code. Adding outlets to a bedroom, home office, garage, or outdoor space requires running new wire to an appropriate circuit or adding a new one.

An addition, a finished basement, or a kitchen renovation requires new wiring planned from the start. We handle the electrical scope of renovation projects across Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County, including the load calculation and any panel work that follows from it.

Exterior outlets, landscape lighting, pool and spa equipment, and outdoor structures all require wiring installed to the specific code requirements for outdoor and wet-location applications. The wiring methods, conduit, and devices are different from interior work, and getting it wrong creates a real hazard.

Wiring Repair and Replacement

Wiring that has deteriorated, been damaged, or was installed incorrectly in the first place is a safety issue, not a performance inconvenience.

Universe diagnoses and repairs wiring problems across Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County.

A dead outlet is not always a tripped breaker or a GFCI that needs resetting. It can indicate a loose connection, a failed device, a broken wire behind the box, or a fault somewhere between the outlet and the panel.

Lights that flicker when an appliance starts, dim intermittently, or behave differently on different circuits point to loose connections, undersized wiring, or a neutral issue somewhere in the circuit. Each has a different fix, and diagnosis comes before repair.

Any burning smell, discoloration on an outlet or switch plate, or warmth at an electrical device is an active electrical problem. It requires immediate attention, not a wait-and-see approach, and it is one of the clearest cases for our 24-hour emergency service.

Wiring that has been cut, stapled through, chewed, or exposed to moisture has lost whatever protection it had. Damaged sections need to be identified, removed, and replaced with properly installed and protected wire, not patched back together.

Outlet and Switch Work

Outlets and switches are the points where the wiring meets the rest of the home, and they are also the most visible signs of a larger wiring concern when they fail.

Universe installs and services outlets and switches across Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County. We can help with:

Adding outlets to a room that does not have enough, installing outlets in an outdoor space, or running a new outlet for a specific appliance requires a licensed electrician to pull the circuit from the panel and terminate the device to code.

Modern code requires GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor locations, and AFCI protection on most branch circuits serving living spaces. We install and replace these devices so the home meets current safety requirements, especially during renovations when the work triggers code updates.

Replacing a failed switch, upgrading to a dimmer, or installing smart home-compatible switches all require correct termination and circuit compatibility. We handle the work and confirm the device is operating safely, including checking the neutral that many smart switches require.

Smart outlets, dedicated circuits for home office equipment, and specialty device wiring all require attention to load, circuit dedication, and device rating. We match the install to the equipment and the code requirements, not to whatever outlet is closest.

Aluminum Wiring Remediation

Homes built between approximately 1965 and 1973 across Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County commonly have aluminum branch circuit wiring. Aluminum wiring connected to standard copper-rated devices is a documented fire risk.

Universe performs aluminum wiring remediation across Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County using approved methods and CO/ALR-rated devices.

Aluminum wiring itself is not inherently dangerous. The problem is at the connection points, including outlets, switches, fixtures, and panel terminations, where aluminum expands and contracts differently than copper, causing connections to loosen over time and creating heat at the device.

The code-compliant solution for aluminum-wired circuits is either full replacement with copper or replacement of all devices with CO/ALR-rated devices designed for aluminum terminations. We evaluate which approach makes sense for your home and perform the work to current code.

A home sale or refinance that surfaces an aluminum wiring flag usually requires documented remediation before closing. We perform the work and provide the documentation needed to satisfy the lender, buyer, or insurance carrier.

Discoloration, warmth, or loose connections at outlets and switches in an aluminum-wired home are the specific failure modes the remediation is designed to address. We identify affected devices, remediate the connections, and complete the work to code.

Electrical Wiring FAQs

How do I know if my home has aluminum branch circuit wiring?

Homes built between approximately 1965 and 1973 in Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County are the most likely candidates. A licensed electrician can identify aluminum branch circuit wiring during an assessment. The wire jacket is typically marked AL or aluminum, and the wire itself is silver-colored rather than copper-colored, but confirmation of actual aluminum use usually requires removing a few cover plates and checking the devices.

Is aluminum wiring in my home dangerous?

Aluminum wiring that is properly connected to CO/ALR-rated devices and correctly terminated at the panel is considered safe. The risk is at the connection points where aluminum and copper-rated devices meet, where the connection can loosen over time and create heat. That is where remediation is targeted.

What is the difference between wiring repair and full rewiring?

Wiring repair addresses a specific problem: a damaged section, a failed connection, a circuit that has lost continuity. Full rewiring replaces all branch circuit wiring throughout the home and is typically done only when the existing wiring is unsafe throughout, not just in specific locations. Most older Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County homes are candidates for targeted repair, not full rewiring, when assessed honestly.

Does wiring work in my home require a permit?

New circuits, panel work, and significant wiring modifications require a permit in Long Island, Rockland County & Bergen County. Device replacements such as outlets, switches, and fixtures generally do not. We pull permits for all work that legally requires one and coordinate the inspection so the job is on record.
