Long Island’s Water Treatment Team

Nassau and Suffolk County homeowners call Universe when they want to understand what is in their water and what to do about it.

Nassau County sits in one of the hardest-water areas in the New York metro area. The water drawn from Long Island’s aquifer system carries mineral content, primarily calcium and magnesium, that deposits scale on every surface it contacts.

That includes the inside of your water heater tank, your dishwasher, your washing machine, your faucet aerators, and your pipes. Universe licensed master plumbers understand Long Island’s water chemistry and have been installing and servicing water treatment equipment across Nassau and Suffolk County long enough to know what works here and what does not.

Why Work With Universe Home Services?

Our plumbers understand how Nassau County’s water chemistry affects plumbing systems and what treatment approaches work for the specific conditions here. That local knowledge changes the quality of the recommendation.

We do not recommend equipment before understanding what is in your water. The test results drive the recommendation, not the other way around.

Since 1954, our team has been installing and servicing water treatment equipment across Nassau and Suffolk County. The water quality problems we address today are the same ones we have been seeing in these homes for years.

Hard water damage to a water heater, scale buildup in pipes, or cartridge failures in faucets are all plumbing problems that often surface alongside a water conditioning conversation. We handle the full plumbing scope. One call addresses what the visit turns up.

Not every Long Island home needs a whole-home softener plus a multi-stage filtration system plus an RO unit. We give you an honest assessment of what your water chemistry requires and what a properly sized solution looks like.

Water softeners require periodic maintenance, including salt refills, resin cleaning, and valve service. Filtration systems require filter cartridge replacement on schedule. We service what we install and provide a consistent service relationship after the equipment is in.

Universe is a BBB Accredited Business. Seven decades of plumbing work across Long Island stands behind every water treatment system we install.

We live and work on Long Island. Homeowners across Nassau and Suffolk County rely on us because we know the water here and we know the homes.

An Easy, Stress-Free Scheduling Process

Getting water treatment right starts with a water test, not a product recommendation.

Universe Home Services makes the process easy from start to finish.

Call us or schedule service online at a time that works for you. We gather the details needed about your water concerns and plumbing situation.

Your licensed plumber reviews water test results and explains what they mean for your home’s plumbing and appliances. You receive a recommendation based on your specific water chemistry, household size, and plumbing configuration, not a default product.

We install water conditioning equipment to current plumbing code, handle the supply and drain connections, and set the system for your specific water conditions. You get equipment that is correctly configured from day one.

The service provided by Alex was excellent. He explained everything he did in detail and taught me something about our split unit that I did not know. I would welcome him back to do our service any time.

Brandon was able to install a PVB for my irrigation system to keep me in compliance with Federal law and I sure liberty water did not turn off my system. Brandon showed up the next day after I called, he completed the work in less than two hours. He was polite and explained what he was doing, even took the time to install extra hose bibs to ensure it was easier for me to blow out the system. I will ask for him again if I have a plumbing issue.
Prompt response and solved the problem.
Neat and tidy installation and clean up. Excellent job!
Nick was very knowledgeable & personable.
Universe is lucky ๐Ÿ€ to have such a great employee
We had a serviceman come to our house to check into our heating issues. Our burner is showing corrosion due to living near the ocean. We could either repair or replace. We are going to replace the system. The serviceman, Anthony was knowledgeable and not pushy.
This edit is in regards to a recent appt for my AC tune up. The fact that I keep getting rescheduled the day before my appt and after confirming is highly unprofessional. You also need to come up with a better response as to why you are rescheduling as your reps use the same line verbatim. Like everyone else my AC requires maintenance. I had to take days off of work to accommodate YOUR availability only to be cancelled each time, now twice! Its highly inappropriate and unprofessional. Do not bother making appts with this company!

April.2026 update. Alex came and did my tune up. He was very knowledgeable and professional. Thank you for all your time and help. Much appreciated!
Frank N was wonderful. He explained everything thoroughly.
Barney R 3 is wonderful, knowledgeable and professional person. I am very happy to work with him.

Bob was extremely knowledgeable and professional. Outstanding service.
I called at 1:15 in the morning due to my oil burner leaking oil. Dylan was at my home by 8:00 a.m to fix the problem. He knew what the problem was right away and fixed it. He was efficient and clean.
Jake was very professional and provided great details regarding services. I really appreciate the time and attention to details that he took.
The service was great and friendly, doesnt seem like there is any bull. A little expensive but worth it for the service.

Water Softeners

A water softener addresses hardness by replacing calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions through an ion exchange process. It is the primary solution for the scale buildup problem that affects most Long Island homes.

Universe installs and services water softeners across Nassau and Suffolk County.

White mineral deposits on faucets, showerheads, tile, and inside appliances indicate calcium carbonate scale from hard water. A water softener removes the minerals before they reach your fixtures and appliances.

Scale inside a water heater tank insulates the heating element from the water above it, forcing the system to run longer and consume more energy. Consistent hard water shortens water heater life significantly on Long Island. A softener installed upstream protects the heater.

Cartridges in single-handle faucets and valves in showerheads accumulate mineral deposits that cause them to fail faster than in softer-water areas. If you are replacing faucet cartridges more frequently than expected, hard water is typically the reason.

Hard water reduces soap and detergent effectiveness, leaves residue on dishes, and causes laundry to feel stiff. A water softener addresses all of these effects.

Water Filtration Systems

A water softener addresses hardness. A filtration system addresses a different category of concerns, including sediment, chlorine taste and odor, iron, and contaminants that softening does not remove.

Universe installs whole-home and point-of-use filtration systems across Nassau and Suffolk County.

Water with elevated iron leaves orange or brown staining on fixtures, in the toilet bowl, and in the laundry. Iron is not addressed by a standard water softener and requires a dedicated iron filter or oxidizing filter depending on the iron form present.

Chlorine taste and odor from municipal water treatment, or hydrogen sulfide producing a sulfur smell, are addressed by activated carbon filtration. A whole-home carbon filter removes these from every tap rather than just the kitchen sink.

Sediment filters protect fixtures, appliances, and downstream treatment equipment from particulate matter in the water supply. They are typically installed as a first stage in a multi-stage treatment system.

Under-sink reverse osmosis systems provide a high level of filtration for drinking and cooking water specifically. We install and service RO systems as a complement to whole-home treatment.

Water Testing

Every water treatment recommendation from Universe starts with a water test. Recommending equipment without knowing what is in the water is guesswork.

Universe provides water testing across Nassau and Suffolk County. We can help with:

Water hardness is not uniform across the county. The appropriate softener capacity, resin volume, and regeneration frequency depends on the actual hardness of the water at your specific address. Testing confirms the number rather than relying on regional averages.

A home with elevated iron content needs a different treatment approach than one with only a hardness problem. Testing identifies which parameters are present and at what levels before any equipment is recommended.

A water test before and after system installation confirms the equipment is performing as specified. For homeowners troubleshooting an existing system, a test documents whether the system is still softening or filtering effectively.

Water supplies and treatment equipment both change over time. Annual testing catches drift in either one so the system continues to perform the way it was commissioned to.

Whole-Home Treatment Systems

A whole-home treatment system combines softening, filtration, and where appropriate, specialty treatment into a single integrated approach. The right configuration depends on your water chemistry.

Universe designs and installs whole-home treatment systems across Nassau and Suffolk County.

Homes with hardness, iron, and taste or odor concerns benefit from a multi-stage configuration that addresses each parameter in the correct sequence. Getting the order right is part of the design.

A whole-home system has to match household water usage, not just water chemistry. Peak flow, simultaneous fixture use, and regeneration timing all factor into system sizing.

A whole-home system has to work with the plumbing already in the home, including pipe material, layout, and pressure. We evaluate the plumbing picture before recommending and installing the system.

A well-designed system is also a serviceable one. Filter changes, salt refills, and component access all get considered during installation so maintenance is straightforward across the years the system is in service.

Water Conditioner FAQs

What is the difference between a water softener and a water conditioner?

A water softener uses ion exchange to physically remove calcium and magnesium from the water, replacing them with sodium. The result is chemically soft water that does not deposit scale. A water conditioner is a broader term that includes softeners and other treatment approaches that address hardness or other water quality parameters through different mechanisms.

How hard is the water in Nassau County?

Nassau County water is among the hardest in the New York metro area, typically ranging from 10 to 20+ grains per gallon depending on the specific water district and time of year. Water above 7 grains per gallon is considered hard. A water test at your address gives you the precise number relevant to sizing and configuring your treatment equipment.

How can I tell if my water softener has stopped performing?

The most reliable indicator is testing the output water for hardness. Hard water coming out of a softener means the resin is exhausted, the regeneration cycle is not completing correctly, or the system has a bypass or brine issue. Visible scale returning to fixtures that had been scale-free is another indicator.

Does a water softener affect my plumbing pipes?

Soft water is slightly more aggressive toward older metal pipes than hard water, primarily because hard water tends to deposit a thin protective layer of calcium carbonate inside pipes. In most Long Island homes, this is not a concern that outweighs the benefits of softening. Homes with very old lead or galvanized pipes are a case where a plumber’s assessment matters before recommending a softener.
