Your gas furnace boasts an AFUE of 95%, variable heat output, and advanced filtration. But all of that efficiency doesn’t mean a thing if you’re not operating it properly. To get the most out of your heating system, it’s crucial that you give it the attention it deserves. Here are four things that could be undermining its performance.

1. Leaky Ducts

The ductwork in your home can only deliver the desired volume of warm air to your home’s interior if it’s sealed properly. However, age and gravity will take their toll on ducts, resulting in leaks. When this occurs, air won’t be distributed evenly and as much as 30 percent of the air will escape through gaps, holes and broken seals. That’s a lot of energy going to waste.

Signs Your Ductwork Is Leaking

  • Sudden spikes in your heating and cooling bills
  • Uneven temperatures
  • Increased amounts of dust

An HVAC technician can inspect your ductwork for leaks and recommend solutions, such as sealing them or replacing them if they’re beyond repair.

2. Inadequate Insulation

Attic insulation helps keep a lid on the warm air your furnace generates. Without adequate insulation, much of that energy will evaporate through the ceiling. Insulation can last decades but over time it can become matted down from moisture from a leaking roof or rodent activity.

One obvious sign of poor insulation: Ice dams. Heat loss from your home is melting snow. Water then runs down to the overhand where it freezes, forming large ice icicles.

Examine the condition of your attic insulation. If it’s matted, consider replacing it or topping it off with blown-in insulation.

3. Clogged Air Filter

Changing out your air filter is an easy task to overlook. However, this simple chore will dramatically improve your comfort, enhance your indoor air quality and help cut your heating costs.

The filter in your furnace intercepts dust and debris circulating with your air. Eventually, the mesh screen becomes clogged, restricting airflow and forcing your furnace to work harder.

Set a reminder to replace the filter every 30 to 90 days.

4. Neglected Maintenance

Your HVAC system requires annual maintenance to operate at peak efficiency. During a routine check-up, the technician will examine the burner, flame sensor, and other components, as well as test the system’s safety controls and startup cycle. This is also an opportunity to repair minor issues before they become major.

Not only will preventive maintenance keep the system in prime condition, but it will also validate its current or extended warranty.

Bottom line: You paid good money for your top-of-the-line HVAC system so take full advantage of its energy-saving capabilities. For all of your heating needs, turn to Universe Home Services at (516) 473-0202.
