5 Common Plumbing Problems and Solutions

Solving Your Plumbing Woes

We rely on our plumbing for many of our day-to-day tasks and when something goes wrong, it can throw off your whole day. Some problems are big and some are small, but no matter the size of the problem, it’s important to remember to be safe, research, and call a professional if you’re in over your head.

Let’s take a look at 5 common plumbing problems you may experience in your home.

Leaks

While leaks are one of the more common plumbing issues homeowners face, they can easily go undetected for a significant amount of time. Your pipes are hidden behind walls, floors, and ceiling, after all and as they say: out of sight, out of mind!

This is why it’s important to keep an eye out for the signs of a leak, including:

  • Water spots on ceiling and walls
  • Low water pressure
  • Dripping sounds
  • Lingering smells
  • Higher than usual water bills

Another way to keep up on what’s going on in your pipes is by scheduling regular inspections with your plumber. They are professionally trained and have the proper equipment to assess your pipes and spot any problem areas that they can repair.

Low Water Pressure

One of the more frustrating plumbing issues is low water pressure. Doing the dishes or showering with a small and slow stream of water will annoy anyone! There could be multiple things causing low water pressure, one being outdated fixtures. Older fixtures can turn faulty over time and develop mineral build-up or begin corroding, making it more difficult for water to flow through at the normal rate.

There could also be an issue with the settings on your pressure regulator or water valve. Take a look at your pressure regulator to see if it needs an adjustment. If this doesn’t solve your issue, you could be due for a replacement regulator. Do the same with your water valve settings.

Remember, if you have questions about either of these pieces, give your plumber a call for advice!

Slow Drains

No one likes water collecting up to your ankles while standing in the shower, or dirty dish water lingering in the kitchen sink. If your drains are taking their sweet time draining, you likely have a clog. This could be caused by a build-up of hair, food, and other particles that find their way down the drain.

You can try solving this on your own by using a drain snake or auger and dislodging the clog yourself, however most large clogs require the help of a professional plumber.

Remember: drain cleaners you find at the store are typically stuffed with chemicals that are harmful to your indoor air quality as well as your drains over extended use.

Running Toilet

The constant sound of a running toilet can get old very fast. Luckily, there is often a quick fix you can take care of yourself. The float height may be too high, meaning the tank is too full. You can solve this by adjusting the float arm with a screwdriver.

Another culprit of the running toilet is a leaking flapper. Shut off the water valve to the toilet and flush to drain the remaining water in the tank. From there, you can fairly easily replace the faulty flapper with a new one from the hardware store!

If neither of these fixes do the trick, it’s time to get a professional in there to determine the real cause.

No Hot Water

Not being able to wake up to a hot shower, or relax in a bath at the end of a day can throw off your whole routine! There are several reasons your hot water heater may not be working:

  • A leaking tank
  • Gas leak
  • Electricity malfunction
  • Faulty valve
  • Malfunctioning thermostat
  • Incorrect tank size
  • Less-than-ideal weather conditions

An issue with your water heater is a much larger problem that requires the work of an expert.
