Our team of Long Island plumbers at Universe Home Services knows that there is one quick, easy way to change the look of your bathroom, and it’s by putting on a new, clean, and shiny toilet seat. It will immediately improve the look of your toilet, especially if the old seat is cracked, rusted, or stained. Before you head to the hardware store or home improvement store, you’ll need to measure your toilet to make sure the new seat fits.

How Do You Measure a Toilet Seat?

  • Find the two bolts at the back of the toilet where the toilet seat attaches to the bowl. Measure the distance between the bolts. (It should be 5.5 for most US toilets.)
  • Measure the length of the bowl from between the seat bolts to the outside edge of the front of the bowl. If your bowl is round, the measurement is usually approximately 16 ½ inches. If your bowl is oblong, or egg shaped, it is typically 18-18 ½ inches.
  • Measure the width of the bowl at its widest point, with the measuring tape on the outside of the brim.

Once you have the measurements of your bowl, it’s time to head to the store to choose your new seat. There are several materials you can choose from including plastic, porcelain, or wood. There are also options of cushioned or elevated seats and even seats with a built-in child seat that can be brought down for smaller bottoms.

You can remove your old seat by removing the bolt caps with a screwdriver and then unscrewing the bolts. Clean the exposed bowl and the bolt holes with the toilet cleaner of your choice. Install your new seat by aligning the seat holes with the post holes and pushing them through, loosely screwing on the nuts. Wait to align the bowl before tightening the nuts.
